Total canal length is 3.8 km. Width of the canal up to the confluence of Bolgoda canal is about 10 m and thereafter it varies up to 24 m. The spans of the Galle Road bridge and the Railway Bridge are 17 m and 15 m respectively.

The Main Drain was rehabilitated under the Phase I of Greater Colombo Flood Control & Environment Improvement Project in early 1990’s. The Main Drain comprises the open canal six numbers of road crossing structures, underground RC box drain, Mutwal Tunnel and the sea outfall. The length of the canal is 1.7 km and the average bottom width is 8 m. The bottom level of the canal is -1.0 m MSL and bank top level is +2.0 m MSL

Conveyance Improvements to Wellawatta Canal at Galle Road Bridge

Wellawatta Canal is one of the main canals in Colombo canal network leading to the major sea outfall of the basin. The stretch from Galle Road Bridge to Marine Drive Bridge (400m in length) have not been rehabilitated under Greater Colombo Flood Control and Environmental Improvement Project Phase I and both banks of this canal stretch are highly developed in the last two decades. The narrowest cross section of the canal is at Galle Road Bridge that has caused reduction of conveyance capacity of the canal. In addition to this, the tidal variations of the sea outfall also control the conveyance capacity of the canal
Dredging of Thalangama Tank

The main purpose of the project was to remove the invasive plant Wel Atha grown in the tank and to dredge the tank to improve the water holding capacity of the tank. This section having a length of 2,260m runs through an urbanized area. This stretch of Kittampahuwa Canal is flowing along few very sharp meandering sections, and the canal has become very narrow at certain sections, due to encroachments. Some resettlement and land acquisition, were undertaken under MCUDP, in order to remove bottlenecks in this section
